For 85 km (53 miles) the Deutsche Weinstrasse (German Wine Road) winds its way through the picturesque villages and vineyards between the borders of Rheinhessen and France. Elegant, aromatic wines thrive in the Mediterranean climate of the Pfalz.
Riesling, the leading variety, and the white Pinots Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder are among the finest white wines, while Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Dornfelder and the rare St. Laurent are foremost for top quality reds. Rivaner and Portugieser are favourites for easy drinking.
