The vineyards of the Hessische Bergstraße (Hessian Mountain Road) are south of Frankfurt on the western slopes of the Odenwald and in Roßdorf and around Groß-Umstadt, where the northern Odenwald slopes down to the Lower Main Plain. An old Roman road that ran parallel to the Rhine, the “strata montana”, gave the growing area its name. Due to the early almond and fruit tree blossoms, the region is known as Germany’s spring garden. A speciality of Germany’s smallest wine-growing region is the Red Riesling. The predominant grape varieties are Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
