The Franconian wine country lies in the hills along the Main River between Frankfurt and Nuremberg. Characteristic Franconian wines, the picturesque winemaker villages and the baroque and festival city of Würzburg make Franconia a cultural Mecca for wine and art lovers.
The Bocksbeutel, the flat-bellied bottle typical of the wine-growing area, is the hallmark of the region. Just like the dry, aromatic wines that are prized as ideal accompaniments to meals. Predominantly white grape varieties, such as Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Bacchus, grow in the red sandstone, shell limestone and keuper soils. The region, however, is primarily known for its Silvaner wines.
Pinor Noir and the typical Franconian Domina are the most frequently grown red grape varieties.
